Research interests

I am an ecologist interested in biotic interactions, ecosystem processes and biodiversity in terrestrial ecosystems. Because the climate is changing more rapidly in the Arctic than in other regions, my research has mainly focused on the tundra biome in recent years. Based on fieldwork in the Icelandic highlands, northern Scandinavia, Svalbard, Arctic Canada, and Siberia, my research aims at understanding the impacts of climate change and land-use change on tundra ecosystems and their biodiversity.

I am particularly interested in understanding Arctic plant life history and population dynamics, vascular plant-bryophyte interaction, and plant-herbivore interaction as well as plant-soil feedbacks, and how those interactions and feedbacks respond to climate change and land-use change. I address my research questions by combining observations and experiments, both in the field and in the laboratory. Many of my research projects have been linked to international networks by use of standardised protocols and common data syntheses. I have participated in the International Tundra Experiment (ITEX) since its establishment in 1990, the Herbivory Network, established in 2013 and joined the Nutrient Network in 2017.
